The North County Coast at a Glance

North of La Jolla and Torrey Pines, San Diego County's coast continues for roughly 30 miles through Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Carlsbad and Oceanside. These are separate cities, each with its own downtown and beach, and they are a quieter, more residential version of the San Diego beach scene. The city of San Diego, with La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Coronado, is covered in the hub guide, San Diego, California. For wine country, Fallbrook and Escondido, a half hour inland, see Fallbrook, Escondido & Temecula Wine Country.

Getting Around Without a Car

The Coaster commuter train and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner both run along the coast. Between them they stop at Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad (Village and Poinsettia stations) and Oceanside, and continue to downtown San Diego. A stay near a station makes day trips to the city easy, and the stations are at the center of each town. Schedules and fares change; check gonctd.com for the Coaster and amtrak.com for the Surfliner. For anything beyond the towns, such as Legoland or the inland valleys, a car is still the easiest option.

Oceanside

Oceanside is the northernmost and most casual of the coastal towns, with a wide beach, a harbor and a downtown that has gained coffee roasters, breweries and restaurants in the past decade. The Oceanside Pier, among the longest wooden piers on the West Coast, runs about 1,900 feet into the ocean and is best at sunrise.

A fire on April 25, 2024 damaged the end of the pier. Most of it reopened in May 2024, but the fire-damaged west end remains fenced off. As of October 2026 the city's rebuild is in design, and officials have said construction could begin as early as April 2027, so the end of the pier will not be open for a visit this year. The city's website has the current status.

The downtown farmers market is on Thursday mornings on Pier View Way, and a Thursday evening market follows. Oceanside also has the harbor, with boat rentals and a seafood scene, and Mission San Luis Rey, a few miles inland, one of California's 21 missions. Surf lessons and paddleboard rentals are easy to find. The Oceanside Transit Center is where the Coaster, the Surfliner and the Sprinter light rail to Escondido meet.

Carlsbad

Carlsbad is the family anchor of North County. Legoland California is the main draw, a full day for children, and the Flower Fields bloom on the hillside above I-5 for about 55 acres of ranunculus, roughly from March to mid-May; check theflowerfields.com for each season's dates. Carlsbad Village is a walkable downtown with coffee, restaurants and shops, a few blocks from the beach and the Coaster station, and Carlsbad State Beach has reliable surf and a bluff-top walk. Batiquitos Lagoon, at the south end of town, has a flat trail around a coastal wetland that is good for birds.

Encinitas and Cardiff

Encinitas is the region's surf town. Swami's is a famed reef break, Moonlight Beach is the wide, social beach with a boardwalk and volleyball, and downtown along the Coast Highway has independent shops, restaurants and a coastal-surf feel. Many rentals here are within a short walk of the sand and some of the best homes are in Leucadia, at the north end, and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, to the south, where the coastal strip runs along the San Elijo Lagoon. The lagoon ecological reserve has hiking trails above the water.

Del Mar and Solana Beach

Del Mar is the smallest and most expensive of the towns, a village of bluffs and ocean-view houses beside the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds host the San Diego County Fair in early summer, and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's race meets run in summer and fall. These events fill hotels and rentals and make traffic on I-5 and Camino del Mar heavier, so book ahead. Solana Beach, just north, has a compact beach-town center, a Surfliner and Coaster station and Fletcher Cove. Del Mar's city beach and the dog beach at its northern end are popular with locals.

Beach Safety and Parking

Rip currents occur on all of these beaches; swim near a lifeguard tower and don't swim against a rip, swim parallel to the shore. Bluffs along the Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar shoreline are unstable, and rock falls and collapses have happened, so stay off the cliff edge and out from the base of the bluffs, especially at high tide. Street parking near the beach fills on summer weekends and holidays. Check each city's website for beach lots, fees and rules before you go.

Choosing Where to Stay

Oceanside has the most affordable stays and the widest range, from condos near the pier to larger beach homes. Carlsbad suits families who want Legoland and a quiet village. Encinitas has the most surf-town character and the most beach houses, many with ocean views. Del Mar is the upscale option with the largest estates.

North County is also a useful base for a longer trip, with the city of San Diego a short train ride south, Temecula wine country and Fallbrook inland, and the desert two hours east. See the San Diego hub guide for the city and the inland North County guide for wine country and day trips.
