The Lake

Flathead Lake is the big water at the south end of Montana's Flathead Valley: 197 square miles, about 27 miles long and 15 wide, and up to 370 feet deep. It is often described as the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the lower 48; it is larger in surface area than Lake Tahoe, though it holds far less water. The north shore at Somers is 7 miles south of Kalispell and about 24 miles from Whitefish, and Polson sits at the southern tip.

The water is clear and cold, which suits sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking better than lazy swimming, except in high summer. The fish are a mix of natives (bull trout and westslope cutthroat) and introduced lake trout. The southern half of the lake is within the Flathead Indian Reservation, and fishing there needs a tribal fishing license.

Bigfork

Bigfork sits on the northeast corner of the lake where the Swan River comes into Bigfork Bay. It has been called one of the best small art towns in America, and the compact village of galleries and restaurants makes the case. The Bigfork Summer Playhouse has staged summer repertory theater since 1960 and is now in its seventh decade. Most of the area's rentals are in and around the village: condos at Marina Cay on the bay (such as Marina Cay 321), houses a short walk from the harbor like the Downtown Lake House, and larger homes along the Swan River, such as the six-bedroom Swan River Retreat.

The East Shore: Cherries and Quiet Bays

MT-35 runs down the east shore from Bigfork to Polson past the Flathead cherry orchards, which the lake's moderating effect makes possible this far north. Fruit stands open along the highway when the cherries ripen in July and into August, and Polson's Flathead Cherry Festival fills Main Street in late July (July 25–26 in 2026). Homes here tend to be the classic lake-cabin trip: Flathead Lake Orchard Oasis with 400 feet of frontage and a dock, Bear Dance Orchard set in a cherry orchard above the water, and studios at Many Springs near Yellow Bay such as Many Springs 411.

The West Shore: Somers, Lakeside and Rollins

US-93 follows the west shore from Somers through Lakeside and Rollins toward Polson. This side is closer to Kalispell and the airport, and it has docks, coves and evening sun. Osprey Getaway is a lakefront cabin on Somers Bay, and Soaring Eagle near Rollins has its own dock and wide views of the lake.

State Parks and Wild Horse Island

Flathead Lake State Park is split into units around the shore: Wayfarers near Bigfork, Yellow Bay and Finley Point on the east shore, West Shore south of Lakeside and Big Arm north of Polson, plus the islands. They are the easy public places to swim, launch a boat or camp. Wild Horse Island, at about 2,160 acres the largest island in the lake, is reachable only by boat; it is known for bighorn sheep, mule deer and a few wild horses. Pets are not allowed on the island, and there is no food storage, so keep food on the boat. Check Montana State Parks for fees and camping.

Getting Around

Bigfork is about 45 minutes from both Whitefish and Glacier National Park's west entrance at West Glacier, and Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) is roughly half an hour away. That makes the lake a practical base for a Glacier trip, as long as you check the park's access rules first: in 2026 there were no vehicle reservations, but Logan Pass had 3-hour parking and a ticketed shuttle. The Whitefish & Glacier guide covers the park in detail.

When to Go

July and August are lake season: warm days, cherry stands and the playhouse running. June and September are quieter and cooler, and the water is colder still. In winter the lake towns go quiet, and Whitefish Mountain Resort, about an hour from Bigfork, is the nearest big ski area.
