Matroni's House - Seafront Getaway in Monemvasia

📍Gefira, Monemvasia

About the Home

Sitting on the seafront in Gefira, with the Monemvasia rock and medieval castle directly across the water, this well-equipped space is a solid base for one of the Peloponnese's most remarkable destinations. Enjoy open sea views and direct views of the rock from the balcony and living area. Air conditioned and well set up for a family or small group. Restaurants, cafés, and a supermarket within easy walking distance. Free street parking and public car park available. WiFi included. Just 500 meters from Monemvasia beach and sitting directly on the Myrtoan Sea, this stay occupies the second floor of a seafront building in Gefira with the Monemvasia rock and medieval castle rising across the water. The living area is warm and traditionally furnished, with wooden pieces, a comfortable sofa, and good natural light from the windows and balcony doors that give the room a settled, lived-in feel. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker, with everything you need for a comfortable self-catered stay. The dining table sits alongside, comfortably seating the whole group. There are three bedrooms, two with double beds and one with a single, sleeping up to five guests. Each room is simply and warmly furnished with wooden furniture and good wardrobe storage. The bathroom is full-sized with a bathtub and shower, kept in clean, traditional style. A separate half-bathroom adds practical convenience for a group of five. The balcony faces directly onto the Myrtoan Sea, with the Monemvasia rock sitting across the water. There is outdoor seating, and it is the kind of spot where you naturally end up spending more time than planned, morning coffee, lunch, an evening drink as the light changes over the water. Please note the space is only accessible by stairs. An ideal destination for year-round vacations - perfect for families, friends, and couples. Gefira sits on the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese, directly opposite the rock of Monemvasia on the edge of the Myrtoan Sea. It is a small coastal village with a working port and a quiet, unhurried character that suits guests looking for a genuine base in the southern Peloponnese rather than a resort experience. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is within easy walking distance, a supermarket, a bakery, tavernas, and cafés along the waterfront. The closest beach is Monemvasia beach, just 500 meters from the property - a pebble beach, calm and sheltered, good for a quick swim without getting in the car. A short walk around the south side of the rock brings you to Portelo, a small historic cove where you swim in deep clear water directly beneath the medieval walls - an unusual spot that most visitors miss. Around 4 kilometres from the property, Pori is a long sandy Blue Flag beach stretching nearly 2 kilometres, with sunbeds, a beach bar, and open views back to the rock - good for walking, swimming, and beach volleyball. Six kilometres south, Xifias is a sandy sheltered beach with natural shade from salt trees along the shore. A little further on at around 7 kilometres, Ambelakia is the most organised option in the area - fine sand, sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, and a direct view of the Monemvasia fortress. The Monemvasia rock itself offers one of the better walks in the area - a trail that circles the full circumference along the clifftops, passing the lighthouse, with sea views on all sides. It takes a couple of hours and involves some uneven ground, so good shoes matter. The broader Laconian interior is worth exploring by car - mountain roads, traditional villages, and a landscape that shifts between coastal and agricultural with very little tourist infrastructure in between. The medieval castle town is 28 minutes on foot or five minutes by car from the property - a fortified Byzantine city continuously inhabited since the 6th century, built on the back of the rock and invisible from the mainland. You can spend a good half day in the Lower Town alone, wandering cobbled lanes, visiting the 13th-century church of Elkomenos Christos and the Archaeological Museum housed in a 16th-century Ottoman mosque. The climb to the Upper Town takes around half an hour and rewards you with clifftop views over the Myrtoan Sea and largely unrestored Byzantine ruins. For a longer day trip, Mystras is about an hour and a half north by car - a UNESCO World Heritage Site with palaces, churches, and fortifications set at 620 metres above the Evrotas valley, and one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in Greece. Gytheio, the main harbour town of the Mani, is around an hour and fifteen minutes by car, with a working waterfront and a gateway to the dramatic landscape of the inner Mani beyond. An ideal destination for nature lovers and those seeking authentic local experiences all year round. A relaxed seafront space with some of the best views of the Monemvasia rock and uninterrupted sea views you will find in Gefira, Monemvasia.
