Two Places, One Stretch of Beach
Destin is a city of about 14,000 people (13,931 at the 2020 census) in Okaloosa County, on the peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. At its western tip, the East Pass is the bay's only outlet to the Gulf and separates Destin from Okaloosa Island.
Miramar Beach adjoins Destin directly to the east. It is not part of the city: it is an unincorporated community of about 8,000 people (8,002 in 2020) in Walton County, with its own ZIP code, 32550, though plenty of rentals there are marketed as "Destin". Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort takes up the east end of Miramar Beach, and beyond it the beach towns of Scenic Highway 30A begin. So, west to east: Destin, Miramar Beach, Sandestin, then 30A.
Destin Harbor and the Fishing Fleet
Destin calls itself the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village". The Destin Harbor is a lagoon sheltered from the Gulf by Holiday Isle, a sand spit lined with condos since the 1970s, with Norriego Point at its tip. The north shore of the harbor is the working waterfront: charter boats, party boats, dolphin cruises, seafood restaurants and the shops and bars of HarborWalk Village.
Destin's fleet is one of the largest charter fishing fleets in Florida, and the reason is offshore: the 100-fathom curve, where the bottom drops away to about 600 feet, comes within roughly ten miles of the pass, closer than almost anywhere else in the state. Half-day trips work the reefs and wrecks for snapper, grouper and triggerfish; longer trips go out for amberjack, mahi-mahi and tuna. Red snapper and some other reef-fish seasons are short and set each year by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission; ask the captain what is open on your dates or check MyFWC.com.
Crab Island
Crab Island isn't an island any more. It is a sandbar just inside the East Pass, on the bay side of the US-98 bridge, that sits under a few feet of clear water. On summer days it fills with anchored pontoon boats and becomes a floating party. You can only reach it by boat: rent a pontoon or book a trip from the harbor.
The current through the pass is strong, and the water deepens quickly at the edges of the bar. Keep children in life jackets, stay close to the boat, and pay attention to the tide; the bar is shallowest at low tide.
The Beaches
Henderson Beach State Park, on US-98 east of downtown Destin, has about 200 acres of protected dunes and a little more than a mile of Gulf beach. It is the one stretch of undeveloped beachfront in the city. Destin also has a dozen public beach accesses, most with small parking lots that fill early in summer. James Lee Park is on Scenic Gulf Drive (Old Highway 98) near the Miramar Beach line.
Across the East Pass, the Okaloosa Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore is a day-use beach on Okaloosa Island, just over the bridge from the harbor. It is the easternmost unit of the national seashore; the rest of its Florida district is around Pensacola.
Miramar Beach and Sandestin
Scenic Gulf Drive runs along the beach from east Destin into Miramar Beach. It is lined with gulf-front condos, townhomes and large rental houses, most of them a short walk from a beach access. Inland, US-98 has the shopping: Destin Commons on the Destin side and Silver Sands Premium Outlets in Miramar Beach.
Sandestin, opened in 1973, is a 2,400-acre resort that runs from the Gulf to Choctawhatchee Bay. It contains condos, villas, houses and hotels in about 30 neighbourhoods, its own golf courses and marina, and the Village of Baytowne Wharf, a pedestrian village of shops, restaurants and evening entertainment. Grand Boulevard, an outdoor shopping and dining centre, is at the resort's US-98 edge. A tram runs between the resort's beach and Baytowne.
Beach Flags and Rip Currents
The Panhandle's beaches have frequent rip currents, and drownings happen here every year, most often on red-flag days. Green means low hazard, yellow medium, red high, and double red means the water is closed. Purple means dangerous marine life such as jellyfish.
Both counties close the water under double red flags. In Walton County, which covers Miramar Beach and Sandestin, going into the Gulf while double red flags fly can bring a $500 fine. Destin and unincorporated Okaloosa County use the same flag system and can also cite swimmers. As of October 2026, check the day's flag at the beach access, or with the South Walton Fire District east of the county line. If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it, then swim in.
When to Visit
The Gulf is warm enough for swimming from about May through October and reaches the mid-80s°F in July and August. Summer is peak season for families and charter fishing. May and September usually bring near-summer conditions with lower rates. October is a good month on the water, though the Gulf starts to cool. Winter is mild but too cold for most swimmers. Hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in August and September. Opal (1995), Ivan (2004) and Sally (2020) all hit this part of the coast, so check the cancellation terms before booking a late-summer stay.
Where to Stay
On the harbor, Dolphin Point 305C is a two-bedroom condo on Holiday Isle with a balcony over the water, a private harbor beach and easy access to boating, Crab Island and HarborWalk. On the Gulf, Dunes of Crystal Beach 404 is a four-bedroom in a 20-unit low-rise complex directly on the beach.
Houses a few blocks from the beach in east Destin make sense for families: BlueMarlin (six bedrooms, hot tub, golf cart), Royal Palms (four bedrooms, arcade room, community pool) and Beachbum's Bungalow (three bedrooms, about 0.4 miles from the beach). Beaux Soleil is a seven-bedroom gulf-front house close to the Destin–Miramar Beach line.
In Miramar Beach, Let's Flamingle! is a two-bedroom gulf-view condo at Majestic Sun, and Costa Del Sol A-7 is a three-bedroom beachfront townhome with Gulf views from its patios. Bella Vista Luxe is an eight-bedroom new build with a heated pool, for large groups. At Sandestin, Beachside One 4036 is a gulf-front three-bedroom a tram ride from Baytowne Wharf.
East Along the Coast: 30A and Panama City Beach
East of Sandestin, Scenic Highway 30A starts. Its planned beach towns (Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach) are 20 to 45 minutes from Destin, depending on which one and on traffic. See the 30A guide.
Panama City Beach is about 47 miles east on US-98, an hour or more by car. It is bigger and busier, with a high-rise strip, Pier Park, and St. Andrews State Park. See the Panama City Beach guide.
