This hive is viewable out of a large window on the south side of the Pollinator. These honey bees are NOT aggressive, and their space is always respected. Groceries, gas, supplies, local cider, and 6 family-owned restaurants are all less than a 5-minute drive away. Located on a 58-acre nature preserve, the Art Bungalow took years to design and create. State Parks/Nature Preserves nearby are: Rockhouse (6.5 miles) Conkles Hollow (10.5 miles) Whispering Cave (14 miles) Old Man's Cave (14 miles) Ash Cave (13 miles) and several more! Domestic animal friends/pets cannot be accommodated. Domestic animals have killed wildlife living within the nature preserve many times in the past. You may see senior dog Peanut somewhere around the property during your stay. Peanut is a 15-year-old-25-pound dog. He is very friendly with humans but does not do well with other domestic animals. This is the second reason domestic animals are not allowed on the property. For art enthusiasts, the Sculpt Decor Studio, run by sculptor Dustin Weatherby, is on the 58-acres closest to the Art Lodge located at the bottom of the driveway. Dustin specializes in animatronics, steel sculptures, wood carvings, and mixed media sculptures. In 2025, he started offering live art performances and experience packages for guests. Feel free to stop by the studio and say hello. The host’s home is on the same 58-acre property. Although the home cannot be seen from the Art Lodge or Tiny Bungalows, the hosts are often nearby to assist you if needed. The decorative tiling to your left when you enter the front door of Pollinator Tiny Bungalow is designed to represent fungal species that grow on the property. Large windows allow you to connect with the outdoors, with the option to close the curtains for added privacy or to darken the space. Leaving the curtains open, you can look at the stars at night from the comfort of indoors. The windows are screened to bring in the Appalachian air while keeping insects out. Raven’s Retreat is a beautiful, 58-acre property located in the Hocking Hills, 2 miles east of Laurelville, Oh. With 2 separate 1/2-mile-long driveways - one to access the top of the ridge and one to go down in the valley - this land has remained mostly untouched. The land was purchased due to its resemblance to the deep woods of West Virginia, home to Raven’s mother, Lisa Mahaney. The property is deeply protected and cared for in its natural state. It contains 4 creeks, hiking trails, a pond, and the top of a ridge. There are several endangered species including whippoorwills and two lined salamanders that reside at Raven’s Retreat. Wildlife is abundant due to keeping this property as wild as possible. While no hunting or fishing is allowed, wildlife viewing stations have been setup for guests to observe the creatures. Birdwatching is abundant here, and local environmental specialists are being engaged to help create a thriving, healthy place for many types of wildlife. Wellness trails have low human traffic. Feel free to explore them and challenge yourself. There is over a mile of hiking trails on the nature preserve. The elevation change from the top of the ridge to the deepest part of the creek bed is over 220ft. If you plan to hike the trails, please keep strong scents such as perfumes to a minimum. This is often overlooked, but it can be confusing and disturb the wildlife. Natural springs and water sources are respected and protected here. No hunting, fishing, or swimming is allowed on the property. Raven’s Retreat Hocking Hills is a wildlife release site for orphaned and rehabilitated animals that have lost their families and been injured due to habitat loss and human encroachment. Always stay on the trails while on the nature preserve and practice leave no trace ethics. Eating Out? Two miles away, in Laurelville, there are 6 family owned restaurants. The State Parks & Nature Preserves nearby are: Rockhouse, Conkles Hollow, Tar Hollow, Cantwell Cliffs, Ash Cave, Old Man's cave. Laurelville is a small town on the western end of the Hocking Hills. It is mostly comprised of nice farmers and kind hearted hill people. The closest larger towns are Logan, Circleville, and Chillicothe. Ravens Retreat is a 2 mile drive up off Thompson Ridge East from Laurelville. A 25 to 35 min scenic walk on the heavily wooded two lane road, if you feel like you would like to walk to town. Laurelville has several businesses. Those being the Hocking Hills Visitor Center, Laurelville Fruit Company , Salt Creek Valley Bank ( AKA Vinton County Bank), Youngs Family Market, Gas Station, Family Dollar, Whites Hardware Store, A Grain Mill, Car Wash, USPS Post Office, and 6 restaurants. Those 6 restaurants are The Ridge Inn, The Village Café, Old Town Diner, L & J's Ice Cream & Pizza, Mam's Rusted Skillet, and Laurelville Pizza. Laurelville Pizza makes delicious vegan/plant based pizza with vegan cheese upon request. If you are up for checking out some local art while away from Ravens Retreat, check out The Jack Pine Studio located 6 miles/10 min drive from the property. This studio focuses on glass work and is well known for intricate glasswork and live demos. If for some reason you are meeting a group of people in the Hocking Hills, Laurelville has a nice playground and shelter house near the family Dollar. If you only have one day to visit a Hocking Hills State Park, check out Conkles Hollow located 11 miles/18 min drive away. If you have more time, check out Rock House located 6.5 miles/11 min away. There is a tree near Pollinator Tiny Bungalow containing honey bees. If you are allergic to bees, you can visit when the weather is cold and the bees are less active. These bees have not attacked anyone but this is just for prevention purposes. There is one senior, 15 year old, jack russel terrier mix named Peanut that lives within the preserve. He is on 24 hour security duty and likes to interact with guests. He is friendly with humans and knows how to charm for snacks. Big time! Peanut does not do well with other domestic animal companions; do not bring domestic anaimals. No trash, liquid chemical fire starters, or cigarette butts are allowed in the firepit. Keep your fires within the fire pit at all times and no higher than 2 feet.
