This privileged location offers spectacular sunsets and sunrises from our roof terrace. The neighborhood is close to the lively historical city center, yet quiet and family orientated. This calm tranquility makes us understand why La Paz is called “The Peace”. Our home is located just three blocks away from the “malecón”, Spanish for waterfront mall that follows the bay for more than five kilometers along the old city center. The desert sun of La Baja is strong at its zenith, whence inhabitants from La Paz are early morning sporties and we do not escape the trend: we love to wake up and go for a walk, cycle or run along the gentle blue seashore. The malecón is also where families, friends and couples stroll at sunset, go for an ice cream, meet with the elders, and even swim in the shallow waters of the center of the bay. The house is walking distance from the city center, where you can visit the town museum, rent bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards, and book sea tours. The nearby streets of Francisco Madero, Belisario Dominguez, and Independencia are home to many cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and bars where you will find delicious breakfasts, the best baja tacos and some of the most refined culinary experiences in La Paz. La Paz is the new destination to discover, as reviewed by Vogue Paris in April 2021, and evidenced by the brand-new “Baja Club” boutique hotel recently opened in our neighborhood by the trend-setting Grupo Habitat, therefore Casa Hormiga is the perfect home for a full experience of La Paz. Our Story Our grandfather was an agriculturist and loved the sea. He believed in the importance of preserving our environment, and learning to understand and nurture nature. We, in turn, wanted to pass-on these passions here in La Paz BCS. Baja California is one of Mexico’s best kept secrets, the place Jean Jacques Cousteau used to call the aquarium of the world. Our waters and deserts are of stunning natural beauty and are protected UNESCO world heritage bio-reserves. It falls upon each and every one of us to help conserve this fragile ecosystem. This is why, in Casa Hormiga, we made a pledge of sustainability. Built in a traditional hacienda style with five-meters-high ceilings, Casa Hormiga is an open house with a sophisticated system of natural air circulation, sustainably cooling the house most of the year. If you still need to use air conditioning, we also harnessed the best of modernity and added solar panels to reduce the carbon footprint of your stay. We also wanted to share our passion for the elegance of Mexico, its traditions and modern design. We combined Mexican natural materials and techniques with contemporary world-renowned Mexican designers. Casa Hormiga is a mixture of warm colours and open spaces with a close relationship between the indoor and outdoor, high ceilings, saltillo clay floors, chukum stone walls, extensive mahogany/nogal wood-work, embroidered wool and linen fabrics, clay kitchenware, blown glass, palm furniture, all worked by some of the country’s best talents. With its verdant garden, luxurious plants, and infinity pool, Casa Hormiga feels like an oasis of freshness and nature amidst the Baja California desert. From its terraces, you can experience stunning sunrises and sunsets, with views on the sea of Cortez, the desert mountains, and all the La Paz bay. At Casa Hormiga, we wanted to share our love of Mexico, tradition, modernity, and sustainability. Welcome home! Our Sustainability Pledge We are committed to sustainability, to help conserve the natural beauty of Baja California. For this we have developed a series of features in Casa Hormiga: Windcatcher open house for natural air circulation, helping the house stay cool without air conditioning for most of the year. A striking and unique feature of Casa Hormiga is its five-meters-high ceilings, combined with its original helix-shaped openings in the upper part of the rooms throughout the house. These are part of a larger house-wide natural fresh air convection system you will notice as you go up the stairs, where strong airflows come across the house through the open wooden persian windows. This is a windcatcher: an ancient traditional architectural element used since times immemorial in scorching-hot desert places such as Persia, in order to provide natural ventilation and passive cooling. The entire staircase of the house works like a wind tower, and the helix-shaped openings in the house act as openings for the air. For most of the year, this open-house design should help you cool the house without the need for air conditioning. Solar panels for reduced carbon footprint. If you still need air conditioning in the house, we added solar panels on the roof to power part of the house. Make sure you close the spaces prior to turning the air conditioning on, that way the cool air does not get blown away through the house’s windcatcher natural air flow. To increase your energy efficiency, use air conditioning while the sun is shining, that way you are powering the air-conditioners directly with the solar panels. Sustainable cleaning. For both your health and that of the Baja ecosystem, we contract a specialized team of professional cleaners that use environmentally-friendly cleaning methods only, with all-natural, hypoallergenic products. Organic soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. To reduce single use plastics and our impact on the environment, we have partnered with an organic products brand which not only allows us to refill the containers already in the house but also provides us with solid shampoo and conditioner. Water use. Be mindful of water consumption: this is a desert! Local designers and materials. Sustainability is also about sourcing local materials and promoting local talent. This is why we made Casa Hormiga a showcase for state-of-the-art contemporary Mexican design, curating unique design pieces blended with traditional methods and natural materials. Services such as water, electricity and internet are not included on Rents longer that 28 days.
